Knowing if and when to treat for Varroa mites is essential. This can mean some level of prevention, mechanical, or chemical treatment methods in order to lessen the spread of Varroa mites or to help dramatically reduce their populations. Colonies infested with Varroa that go untreated will be at great risk. It is a slow colony death, full of disease and shorter lifespans.

There is a lot of debate in the beekeeping community about chemical treatment, some beekeepers preferring not to treat. You should do your own research and come to whatever conclusion best suits you and your beekeeping goals. If you opt not to chemically treat your hives, it is highly recommended to employ other methods to help deter the spread of Varroa.

Varroa mites are a community problem and will not affect just your apiary, but the apiaries around you. When it comes to Varroa mites, do your due diligence and make well informed decisions.
